I know, as a new user to LJ, I use the logged in home page to check if there are any comments on my journal, or any notes in my inbox. I also confess, I check to see what is being promoted as the site of the week. I use that stats, and I use the links to get to my scrapbook. I agree that having modules the user can turn on/off or, in the case of comments, collapse, would be good.
