I do like the journal stats and the quick update box from the Portal. I think friends page and recent comments should be optional, as I've heard more than one person upset that logging in to a main site page was showing unexpected protected content that someone reading over the shoulder could see, or did see, with results that were not desired.
Something that the Portal doesn't have is the top N entries from the last X entries on the friendspage with the most comments.
