Brainstorming time! What kind of modules do you guys think would be useful to have on the logged-in homepage? These are the things that would display to you when you visit www.dreamwidth.org while logged in; potential examples would be things like recent news updates, a small Recent Comments display, a stripped-down/abbreviated update page, a birthdays box, etc.
My best guess would be that new users are likely to visit the home page a whole lot more than experienced users. I suspect that most people just go straight to their friends page without bothering to check in on the front page first. I also think that that's the way it should be. The main content on any LJ code based site are the journal entries, and the friends page is where the entries are. I think that trying to make the home page or the portal page more appealing to long-term users is doomed to failure. Nothing that anyone can put on them is ever going to be half as appealing as what's on your friends page.
As such, I'd say to tailor the front page predominantly towards new users, with links to things like the friends page (what's that going to be called after the wtf split?), the update page, and the update profile page all listed prominently. It's not so useful to people who know the site inside out, but so what? They're never going to visit the homepage anyway.
(The other side of this is that I think it would be really really awesome if portal-like modules such as birthdays or recent comments could be made available to S2, so we can have them (as optional style modules) on our friends pages. That's much lower prioriy than getting the homepage right though, obviously.)
