Just to clarify how this all works...

There's two methods of receiving comment notifications through email:
the old way, and the new (ESN) way. The old way only had the email
option, nothing else. The ESN way includes the Inbox and then
optionally email. Receiving things in the Inbox is a requirement of
all ESN notifications at this point in time.

For a long time, people could use the old comment notification method
even when the ESN way was there. This was changed when the new
settings page went up--we (i.e. LJ) decided it was very confusing to
have the options separate, and we went with the ESN way as the only
way to sign up for comment notifications. This made the most sense
because the goal is to get rid of the old method entirely (it's still
used to send replies to comments you make in other journals right now,
which is why it's still around at all). It was silly to have to
update the text in both methods if we wanted to change the emails,
etc.

Just noting that anyone who hasn't saved the page at the new settings
page yet (on LJ) would still be getting the old method (assuming
that's what they were signed up for before). It only switches people
to the new method once you submit that form.

Anyway, if we want to give people the option of bypassing the Inbox
for ESN notifications, then it will require a fair amount of work on
ESN itself. I know that for LJ, the reasoning was that emails
sometimes don't make it (are delayed, get lost somewhere, etc.), so
the Inbox was a requirement so people wouldn't lose anything. If we
want to get rid of that requirement for Dreamwidth, we can (with
development time, of course). Or maybe we should talk about other
methods of solving the issue, such as a more robust and organized
Inbox that doesn't get cluttered/slow when there's a lot of stuff in
it.
