Yes, before we had an LJ inbox, you just had an option as to whether
or not you received e-mailed comment notifications. And even now on
LJ, if you go to
http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=notifications, you can
still choose between e-mail, LJ Inbox, IM, and TxtLJ notifications.
They're all independent, rather than forcing you to get Inbox
notifications and then opting in/out of the rest.
