(From Compaq's DEC/EDI group... Here's my opinion... )

There are three ways to send traditional EDI documents over the
internet today, although others could easily be developed - especially with
the integration of XML. The first two ways (Secure FTP and Secure SMTP)
have been available for some time, and are proven certified approaches in
which you can depend on the security, non-repudability, and integrity of the
transmission. The third way, via HTML, is not established stongly as yet.
The widest accepted approach, for which standards have been defined for the
industry, is the secure SMTP approach via the EDIINT definitions.
CommerceNet has driven alot of this work.

CommerceNet is a unique, not-for-profit market and business
development organization which specializes in among other things, promoting
EDI over the Internet. They have been doing so for since 1994. CommerceNet
sponsors a Secure EDI Over the Internet interoperability testing program
approximately once per year. The goal of this program is to accelerate and
maintain the development of interoperable Internet-enabled EDI products by
administering a suite of tests which verify that a software product is
interoperable with all other software products that have been tested. You
can find out about this certification at:
http://www.commerce.net/certification/ . These products use EDIINT - that
is S/MIME & SMTP. Compaq's DEC/EDI supports this and was fully certified.
The Compaq Secure SMTP relay can work with a number of products in addition
to Compaq's DEC/EDI. (

Additionally, Compaq's DEC/EDI supports secure FTP EDI
transmissions. You can find more about this at:
http://www.digital.com/edi/edi-cmprs.html . An HTML standard is being
defined, and CommerceNet has proposed some interoperability testing for this
area as well perhaps this year (2000).
