The 'third way' you mention in your response might better be categorized as HTTP
rather than HTML. Incidentally, IETF EDIINT is working on this specification
(AS2) now, as a follow on to the SMTP specification (AS1).

        (From Compaq's DEC/EDI group... Here's my opinion... )

There are three ways to send traditional EDI documents over the
internet today, although others could easily be developed - especially with
the integration of XML. The first two ways (Secure FTP and Secure SMTP)
have been available for some time, and are proven certified approaches in
which you can depend on the security, non-repudability, and integrity of the
transmission. The third way, via HTML, is not established stongly as yet.
The widest accepted approach, for which standards have been defined for the
industry, is the secure SMTP approach via the EDIINT definitions.
CommerceNet has driven alot of this work.
