Hi Paul -
It is difficult to tell from your email if you currently are working, or looking for work & want the experience. If currently working, just approach the manager of the mapping group and ask if you can help with the mapping side (on your time) or get training. You might have to pay for the training yourself, but at least you will have it. I'd work with my own manager, making the mapping experience part of my training goals for career improvement. Also, translators can be different, so you need to focus on which one you wish to training on. If not working, perhaps approach some local businesses with EDI and see if you can donate your services for a week or two while you try mapping, TP setup, etc. Make sure that they are using one of the major products, and not some obscure or homegrown solution. If they are really busy, they might take you up on it. You could also interview and say that you don't have the mapping experience, but will pay for the training & time to get the job. You could also approach one of the major translator houses and see if they will let you in their training. As a long shot, your unemployment might pay for the training. You might try to call some of the major vendors and find out the sales reps in the area. One of the sales reps might help you get experience on the tool. I was in your situation initially, and was leading a vendor selection for a client. After the selection, one of the sales managers for the one of the finalists asked me if I'd like to take training on their tool. Of course, I grabbed the opportunity. I've managed EDI projects but always had programmers do the mapping/programming. Most EDI positions these days want someone with hands-on mapping experience. I have 3 years experience managing EDI projects as the lead business contact. I can read, analyze, and troubleshoot EDI transactions and have knowledge of all aspects of EDI Implementations (requirements, comm setup, testing, troubleshooting, etc). How can I get hands on mapping experience to complete my skill set? Below are examples of how I've been involved in EDI Implementations: - updating/maintaining company EDI implementation guides - gathering customer requirements - ensuring the business and internal core systems can meet the EDI needs internally - setting up test plans/scenarios to be followed - write up of logical mapping from core applications to EDI and vice versa - contact with VAN's to setup communication links: exchanging TP ID/Qualifier, interconnects, etc - entering test data into our internal core apps for end to end testing in test env - managing production cut-over - troubleshooting business/technical issues once live Any help would be very much appreciated.
