Either it isn't waiting long enough for the PPP connection to come up, or you have something else setup wrong.
Before you mess around getting Emailer to connect to earthlink itself, make sure you can get the Mac to connect manually. So fully setup the PPP client, and then connect to earthlink and make sure you can browse the web. Once all that works, THEN go back and try to get Emailer to work right.
