I will need to find some sort of browser for this old box.

Check out iCab, although I don't know how far back iCab will work with.

I have collected this along with several others. I will move it to the IIvx.

Check out www.macorchard.com, they should have links to some terminal programs that should work with System 7.6. That will at least let you try to connect to the POP server manually.

Excellent; I will do that.

However, you may still have a DNS issue as your original complaint said it couldn't find earthlink.com. Since you said you think the PPP connection is actually up, I'd next look at a possible DNS failure.

I will study that.

Have you manually assigned the DNS servers in your TCP/IP control panel?

In fact, Eudora complains about some Domain Name Server error.
The earthlink tech support document says to let the PPP client do this somehow automatically. I will try to set it manually.

If you are starting on the MacBook, just use the terminal and telnet. POP Servers just use standard telnet over port 110. Open the terminal, type 'telnet mail.earthlink.net 110'.

Certainly works! More things to study. Seems if I can repeat this with a terminal from System 7.6 then eventually I can configure things correctly on the IIvx. I will also try it on the MacBook via a modem instead of via the internet.

BTW, am I the only idiot posting on this list? ;-) I don't see many others, but I'm certainly grateful for your help.
