I'm sorry Dave I have done next to no testing-I was hoping you could tell me!
as per docs there is no parity used. speed and port must be set in config file
to use the serial port .
Have you tried this successfully with the original (not for emc) Classicladder?
(I think I remember you saying you did..)

I assume you used something like this in your config file:

MODBUS_MASTER_SERIAL_PORT=/dev/ttyS0
###MODBUS_MASTER_SERIAL_PORT=
MODBUS_MASTER_SERIAL_SPEED=38400
MODBUS_MASTER_SERIAL_USE_RTS_TO_SEND=0
MODBUS_MASTER_TIME_INTER_FRAME=200
MODBUS_MASTER_TIME_OUT_RECEIPT=500
MODBUS_MASTER_TIME_AFTER_TRANSMIT=0

When you open the config window do you see the (some) data you entered in the
config file (under modbus distributed i/o heading)?
Did you map the modbus address to an input/output variable? (done in the same
window as above)

I will try to help as much as I can -i'm working long night shifts right now...
