The Axiom is ISA. I think there are some more modern I/O boards that either use or emulate a number of 8255 I/O chips. It's been a couple of years, so I don't remember if the 5214 is like that or not. You load the driver(s) into HAL, and the I/O provided by each board appears as HAL pins. Then you connect those pins to EMC using HAL commands to suit your needs.
