I'd get some contractor cleanup bags to make covers for the magnets. 
They're much thicker (3 to 7 mil) plastic than trash bags or any kind of 
food bag.

Some kind of heat sealer should work to form pieces of the bags into a 
cover that can be removed and turned inside out to pull shavings off the 
magnet.

Scour the thrift stores for an old Seal-a-Meal, preferably one that 
makes a wide seal instead of just the narrow line.
