The problem is cheap hobbiests like Gene baulk at that extra 0 on the end of 
the price tag for a real ATC spindle.

No, clearly for BT30 this is a solved problem. I was thinking about what could 
be done for those unfortunates who were daft enough to buy a spindle with a 
collet end rather than something usable.
