I went through the technical manual, and found the variables to tweek to
enable the resistor braking.
On the Yasawa they seem to  be:
L30-04 = 3
L8-01 = 1
then I set:
C1-02 for .2  (sec) deceleration

Oh boy, what a difference the correct settings make!
