I agree.  For example, if you never receive messages from Joke or Free4All,
there's no need to add rules to block them.  Same for if you never get
messages with subjects: "stock tip" "future mailings" "financial freedom".
Only if you see some of these patterns in your incoming junk mail is it
necessary to add the appropriate rules.

It could also be non-junk-related rules setting the status/category to None.
I'd check those as well.
