That's certainly true.  But comparing my Elan IIe
(with ECF turned off, only central point active) with
my EOS 3 (ditto, or with CF 17 = 1) the difference is
so great as to need to precise testing.  

With the ballplayer coming towards the camere, the IIe
w/ either 100,, f2 or 70-200 2.8 struggles to keep up
with the action in a basketball game, giving me maybe
50% in focus shots.  The 3 with the same lenses gives
me about 80-90% in focus.

Shooting soccer the difference is less extreme,
probably because of brighter light and the subjects
not as close (at least some of the time).  And maybe
because I'm using an f5.6 lens.  But the 3 still gives
me a noticeably higher percentage of in focus shots
(also with the subject coming towards me).

If I'm shooting parallel to the action, the
differences are probably minimal in soccer, although I
think the 3 still does better in dim light w/ a fast lens.
