Opinions on that seem to vary quite a lot.
Indeed, users at Fred Miranda seem less than happy about it,
but elsewhere some reports are very positive, e.g.,

Looking at some sample pictures (including 100% enlargements
of corners) it doesn't appear bad at all.

The Sigma also is bigger, apparently noisier to focus
and ergonomically if not worse at least different 
(esp. regarding the manual focus setup) than Canon lenses.
