Chip & Taipani,

There are several users on the Fred Miranda site that have tested the 
new Canon 17-40mm lens on digital bodies. Like other WA lenses 
not specifically designed for digital, the edge sharpness stinks.  
Buy the Sigma, it is cheaper and designed for digital camera 
bodies and will provide sharper images that the Canon lens.
Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too!
