That was the situation I found myself in many years ago. I started shooting with an EOS Elan, then upgraded to a Elan 7E, and then upgraded further to the EOS 3. I knew after quite a while of shooting the 3 that I would never be happy with a digital body unless it was EOS 3 quality. That means I needed a 1D.
I held out for quite some time and when I spotted a few refurbished 1D bodies at B&H for $3500 (they were still selling new for $4000-$4500) I jumped on it. Never regretted waiting or looked back. If you want an EOS 3 type body you will need a 1 series Canon digital. Plain and simple. Good luck and start saving...
