I recently bought a new Seagate Vertical Recording technology 80g drive to replace my daughter's laptop drive. It is very very fast, and has a 5 year warranty from Seagate. I suspect that it will last a while. The old drive, which my son grabbed (hence my need for another) was a Hitachi and had experienced some failed sectors, but I think that was more WinXP and 17 year-old teenage girl-itis more than hardware failure.

Regards, Jim

First of all, nearly everyone used IBM drives at one point. When

Seagate and not more than one or two WD or Samsung. Really don't
see WD laptop drives that often.

Eh, Consider yourself lucky. I used to swear by WD during the WD vs
Maxtor wars.

FWIW, IBM only sold 70% of its drive business (or the assets) to
Hitachi. That was shortly after the beginning of the DeathStar
debacle.

Yup, Hitachi probably are good drives, just my clumsy butt, errr...
faulty plastic laptop case that couldn't withstand a gentle drop.

Buying a Mac (laptop) is a really poor excuse to get a new
computer. It isn't as if the hardware is more or less reliable
than any other computer. One thing I do recommend to *anybody*
considering a Mac, get the extened warranty no questions asked.
They cost way too much to repair and I refuse to work on them
any more.

I enjoyed this note concerning Macs, but it does makes sensible
sense! ;-)
