If you select the XFree86 3.3.6 instead of 4.2.0 it should work out.  In any 
case, don't uninstall the whole shebang if you run into a similar glitch in 
the future.  As long as you can get to a CLI interface then you can at least 
try to fix things from there. I HIGHLY recommend  that you install pine under 
the email clients next time around too.  It installs pico as its default 
editor which is a MUCH friendlier editor than vi or emacs (text-based).  If 
you have to fiddle with configs it is much easier to do it in pico than 
trying to work out the cryptic commands for vi or emacs.  I always install 
pine specifically for the sake of pico because it is so easy to use that I 
can concentrate on fixing things I might screw up rather than trying to 
figure out/learn oddball key combinations for an editor.
