Angela, you're making me work hard here. So, I'll pull the book on
you, MMY's commentary to the Gita. In this commentary, MMY mentions
the philosophy of Sankhya which describes the categories underlying
the basis of the entire creation. In brief, these are

1. Purusha-- the transcendental Reality, or the silent witness of
creation.

2. Prakriti-- the primal substance out of which the entire creation
arises. Its constituents are the three gunas. Theses gunas are
responsible for all the change and form the basis of evolution.

3. Mahat-- the first state of evolution where the previously
undifferentiated primal substance, prakriti, begins to move towards
manifestation.

4. Ahamkara-- the principle responsible for the individuation of
mahat.

5. Manas -- the cosmic mind which provides the object for the
individuating principle, ahamkara.

6. Indriyas -- these pertain to the 10 priciples relating to the
senses. These are the five senses fo perception and the five organs
of action.

7. Tanmatras -- constitute the five basic realities, or essences, of
the objects of the five senses of perception.

8. Mahabhutas -- these are the five elements out of which material
creation is constituted: space (akasha), air (vayu), fire (tejas),
water (apas) and earth (prithivi).

In short, this is how consciousness evolves into manifested reality.

contribution to Vedic studies--I'm not qualified to judge that, but
it does go a long way to explain the processes of the mind, and, by
the way, it is not essentially different from the way some Western
mystics have read Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with spirit
corresponding to devata, father with knower or rishi, and son with
chhandas or object of knowledge. But Curtis is still right in his
stance of wanting some evidence of how this "translates" into the
physical matter.
