Well, if John is right about his substrate of consciousness not being anything
like a mind, then why couldn't a rock be a byproduct of that kind of
consciousness? I'm not a rock, at least not yet, but I see no reason why that
couldn't be a viable scenario.

This is the part that I don't buy. I don't even know how someone
could even claim to know this. I don't find the scriptures
authoritative, and someone (myself included) experiencing it that way
doesn't cut if for me either. People are wrong about all sorts of
stuff when it comes to interpreting what their experiences mean. But
I am satisfied that for me consciousness comes with life. Thinking
about a rock as having consciousness just isn't meaningful for me. It
is kind of poetic, but I just can't think of it as a serious
ontological assertion.
