The key word here is therapy ... and cognitive therapy at that. Although it may be useful as therapy, it is not meditation nor is the purpose of the two practices similar.
Emotional afflictions are dealt with in a decidedly non-therapeutic manner in the meditative traditions. Almost all of them presume that the practitioner has abandoned the tyranny of gross emotionality before even starting a meditative practice. Westerners are notoriously unstable in this regard. It can't be just blamed on wayward kundalini. In fact you'll remember that Vimalananda pointed out that sadhu-s liked to call their kundalini "bitch, whore and adulteress" since she had left her Lord (Prabhu) to cohabitate with the gana-s. Vaj: Non-sectarian meditation forms like Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are very helpful in this regard.
