Beth, There is a book published in 1983, TM: An Aid to Christian Growth, which 
contains several essays by Catholic priests, all of whom were meditators, which 
tackle the very questions you raise here. The book was based on papers given 
during a week-long workshop attended by Catholic TMers. It's written in 
accessible, non-scholarly style. There are some cheap used copies available on 
Amazon US. The editor is Adrian B. Smith.
