I just assumed that maybe it had something to do with the cremello gene, since all the light brown duns I am familiar with happen to also have an ulsdun grandparent. A pity it has become the most common color - therefore, the favored color - in the Fjord horse. I really do like the darker brown duns best. I always feel like my lysbrun dun looks 'faded'. He also has an unusual coat: it has smoother and rougher spots in the summer. The smoother hair is darker colored(like his dam) and the rougher(longer) hair is light colored(like his ulsdun granddam). It makes him look like he has what we call 'dapples' in his body coat. Is this something that lots of lysbrun Fjords have? He is healthy, well-fed, and wormed regularly. Our other Fjords are the darker brown dun, and have a 'regular' Fjord coat with no dappling. I believe his parents were Modellen - an ulsdun stallion - and Lin - an ulsdun mare. Apparently there are six or seven foals from this ulsdun to ulsdun cross. I think the horse on the NFHR web page is the only one who is pure white, or kvit. I assume 'kvit' means 'white' in Norwegian - seems I read that somewhere. If so, then there would be a reason for at least one 'kvit' foal from this cross. Modellen's grandsire was a horse named Kviten(full brother to our ulsdun mare Line, which would make his sire Ola Gik and his dam Flikka). I assume from this horse's name that he was probably pure white with no black(dun) stripe. The only spriped hooves I have seen on Fjords were on red duns - and these were mature horses. I have seen a couple of them with some striping on one or two hooves. My lysbrun dun gelding had faint stripes on his front feet as a foal. His hooves are black now, and very heavy horned.
