Anneli, Our old ulsdun(white dun) mare has black stripe in her forelock, mane, and tail, BUT the eel stripe down her back is definitely grey. The tips of her ears and the stripes on her knees - plus the dark colour on the fronts of her front legs - are also grey, rather than truly black. The only other ulsduns I have seen I've seen only in pictures. They appear to have black stripes in mane and tail, can't see their eel stripes in the pictures. It looks like maybe Modellen didn't have an eel stripe, but I've never seen him 'in person'. Dave? I don't know that much about genetics in horses, but it does seem that the (C) gene dilutes the 'brown-ness' of a Fjord's coat - brown dun becomes white dun (or sometimes just lysbrun dun) with the cremello gene, red dun becomes yellow dun, and it seems that white dun(ulsdun) becomes white with no stripes if another cremello (C) gene is added in the next generation - so it would be my guess that maybe the (C) gene would not affect grey dun all that much. Maybe just lighten the colour a bit, or remove any brown undertones. Anyone know for sure? Let us know what your research turns up.
