Using bumpmaps of 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 give ugly edgy craters rather than fine details. It's no use doing Rivet rows in 1 pixel, this doesn't look good. A large bumpmap images with details gives another advantage as the livery texture file can be a smaller resolution, which helps with MP loading time or livery switching. Greetings D.
