Not in my testing.  FTR I did give your tile visibility patch two rounds
of overnight tests.  The first one locked up, so I doubt your locking
removal is 100% safe.  I then tried a simplified version that just
replaced the tile array with a bitset.  There was no measurable difference
in speed.

Your choice.  I remain concerned that there is a serious bug that is
causing a bad slowdown that I am not seeing.
