Yes, the PGres implementation was created by Dr. Bob Shepard. I
worked closely with him on the move to ZODB FileStorage. He is on
this list and has been very helpful.

limited with pure Zope?"

You are certainly welcome to implement a SQL backend. You have
the source... <s>
I originally was going to use PostgreSQL. I love it. I used to
see the world in third-normal form. <s>
Then the light of OODBMS was upon me (after much searching in the
darkness).
PostgreSQL simply adds another layer of complexity to the system
and installation. For interfacing to other applications having
the ability to use PostgreSQL, ODBC, etc. is one of the pluses of
the ZODB storage manager. But for a basic installation I don't
see a need.
