Hi Catherine, fsaverage is part of the FS distribution. You can just:
cd $SUBJECTS_DIR
ln -s $FREESURFER_HOME/subjects/fsaverage .
This will create a symbolic link to fsaverage in your $SUBJECTS_DIR
