You can measure bandwidth in real time using a utility like Menu Meters.

The webcams performance can be related to many things. Some cams are  
slow, and can only do so many frames per second. If it USB 2.0 and  
you're attaching to a USB 1.0 port, that'll slow things up to a crawl.  
Older Macs don't have the horsepower to display higher frame rates  
even if the cam and the connection are fast enough.
