The plan sounds good, +1 from me to proceed that way.
Right now I don't have time to look into the branch but I'll try to do
that later.

Hmmm... I think he mentioned something about Swing widgets, but
at this point in time you're the driving force behind mappane
so it makes sense to have at least you as co-maintainer.

I did not see your name among the module developers:
http://svn.osgeo.org/geotools/trunk/modules/library/coverage/pom.xml
If you co maintain that module you should be in that list
with the same roles as Simone (well, maybe not docs, but
you get the idea).
