Remember that there may be a bass note that should be kept separate.
If I write a C6/F (f c e g a) and it was transformed to an internal
format, I wouldn't want it to be displayed as Fmaj9 (or whatever),
since there was probably a reason why I wrote it as a C chord in the
first place.
