This one's an easy fix. The "trick" is not that you have to comment anything out, but rather to make a change in your gabc file header. The pertinent option is:

initial-style: 0;
%The style of the initial letter. 0 means no initial letter, 1 a normal one, and 2 a large one, on two lines. Note that if you want to use the initial on two lines, you have to specify at least the two first line breaks.


On the other issue, I know that later versions of Windows (I use XP and don't have this problem) have gotten more possessive of the program install locations. While I'm not sure, they may be protected in the way that automatically undoes any user made changes. You might try putting the Scores folder in either your user directory (My Documents, Desktop, etc.) or in the root of your hard drive (c:).
