This is the correct syntax. The clef should appear by itself in parentheses first.
However, after fixing that, I'm not having the same issue typesetting the file (something you said you tried and got the same problem from). I've got to get ready for Vespers now, but after dinner tonight I'll create an updated installer for you to try. That way we can make sure we're running identical installations of Gregorio as we work the problem out.

I'm fairly certain there should only be one exclamation point here, but I can't be sure because I don't normally use UTF-8 encoding in my files (I prefer to use the explicit TeX encoding of accented characters, but this is entirely a personal preference and shouldn't create the error you're seeing.).
