Dear Brother, Ok... I uninstalled Gregorio 2.3, downloaded and installed the 2.4.0rc per the link that you provided (thank you so very much, btw). Alas, with the initial-style: 0; instruction in the header in the same place as before, I get the same error, namely:
"error: syntax error error: unable to find the first letter of the score error: can't determine step and line of the key." Mind you, when I remark out the initial-style setting, it complies just fine to a .TEX file, and the main-luatex is able to call it and generate the lovely .pdf output, but sans the G of "Gloria" resulting in "lória in excélsis Deo." Oh, and the earlier suggestion about the \gregorio folder under \Program Files (x86) being protected was right on the money. Win 8.1 being the prickly little beast that it is, although i have administrator rights, I am unable to un-read only the folder. Fine, be that way. So I made the suggested \gregscores under \My Documents and lo & behold, all the files are there and accessible. Of course Office 365 has to be difficult, but I can manage in place a score .pdf into a Word document, albeit not as seamlessly as Insert File in previous versions of Word. So, with all the various help, I managed to overcome the missing and/or inaccessible file issue -- I had it in the back of my head to have a look at the folder properties but seemed to have been focused on less simple causes. Thank you, thank you, and copious blessings upon you all for your kindness. Now I just need to figure out the issue of initial-style and then all the secret arguments for other functions, and I suspect I'll be all set! HA! In Christo rege, Fr. M.
