That's usually my issue and I agree Ubuntu usually does that fine. Most stuff just installs and runs.

My only personal issue with Ubuntu itself is the Unity desktop, but as has been said before, it's easily replacable with a 'gnome fallback' option from the Ubuntu software installer. Try Unity first though as it suits some people well.
