Couldn't resist it :-)

All went well, although I had to run as root because I moved the
run file to /opt/. When it finished I could scan, but not print.

I knew I shouldn't have done it at this time of night :-) I decided that I
should remove all the printer queues from localhost:631 then run the install.
I got

warning: A previous install of HPLIP is installed and/or running.
error: The previously installed version of HPLIP may conflict with the new one
being installed.
error: It is recommended that you quit this installer, and manually remove
HPLIP before continuing.

So I tried

make uninstall
make: *** No rule to make target `uninstall'. Stop.

This time I will definitely leave it until morning. Question is, though, what
do I do now?

It looks as though my attempts to help myself have just dug me in deeper :-(
