Naw, just have a keyboard which works for the most common characters that you use. There are a lot of such. The software needs to be changed to emit Unicode instead of whatever it is doing now. For unusual characters, you might need some sort of "compose" key, or a way to enter the character numerically. Eg. My keyboard does not have a "yen" sign. In Unicode, the "yen" is +U00A5.
