Those numbers sound about right to me. Prices probably better in some deals, etc., etc.
But don't forget that server memory typically is at least ECC memory whereas typical PC memory is not. And z memory is now RAIM--with significant redundancy and continual scrubbing. It's a different physical packaging than PC DIMMs too. So the reliability of 32GB of z memory is going to be much better than 32GB of server memory, and hardly worth comparing to PC memory. Still, seems like there's likely very good profit margins on z memory. And it is one of those factors that does make the platform more expensive than it seems it should be. For desktop PC the cost of GB is approx. 14 USD. BTW: the largest mainframe has 100 cores and 3TB or RAM, the largest (still IBM) X6 x server has 120 cores and 12 TB RAM. Cost of the largest X6 is less than single EC12 core. -- Radoslaw Skorupka Lodz, Poland ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
