Well, defence without attack.
I didn't write the memory in mainframe is the same as in x server or in regular PC. Just provided prices. Real prices, which of course may be "better" (why don't say LOWER?).

Some remarks:
* RAIM as memory redundancy is not unique to mainframes. I saw memory mirroring option. Option is better than the only choice.
* ECC can be used in most nowadays PCs.
* Different physical packaging is no advantage at all.
* For many people "good enough" is not the best. Price is also important.
* Virtual machines, 12TB RAM, 120 cores PC server for less than single book, single CP mainframe - think what Linux users would choose more likely.

Those numbers sound about right to me. Prices probably better in some deals,
etc., etc.

But don't forget that server memory typically is at least ECC memory whereas
typical PC memory is not. And z memory is now RAIM--with significant redundancy
and continual scrubbing. It's a different physical packaging than PC DIMMs too.
So the reliability of 32GB of z memory is going to be much better than 32GB of
server memory, and hardly worth comparing to PC memory.

Still, seems like there's likely very good profit margins on z memory. And it
is one of those factors that does make the platform more expensive than it
seems it should be.

Interesting numbers. Latest entry is $.007/MB for PC memory. I wonder what
the average price for z12 memory is today.
Well, today price of zServer memory is approx. 900-1100 USD per GB.
For x series you can have 32GB for the same money.
For desktop PC the cost of GB is approx. 14 USD.

BTW: the largest mainframe has 100 cores and 3TB or RAM, the largest
(still IBM) X6 x server has 120 cores and 12 TB RAM. Cost of the largest
X6 is less than single EC12 core.
