That depends on what application(s) they want to run on that 120 core machine.
Anything priced per-core and in the tens of thousands of
dollars/euros/whatever, is going to change the cost equation drastically.
Still, too many people do focus solely on the cost of acquiring the hardware,
though, so they're liable to make the choice for the seemingly cheaper
hardware. Explaining why that's a bad idea keeps me busy. :)
You are absolutely right. I forgot about software.
A typical case is Oracle. ...but what about other vendors? I saw some
Linux software where the cost for mainframe was simply higher than for
PC. AFAIK even Suse or Redhat (you know better) price is different for
PC server and for mainframe.
Not to mention free software, which costs same money for both platforms. ;-)
BTW: When we talk about sofware, let's talk about apples and oranges,
but still fruits. Rhetorical: what's cheaper - MS SQL Enterprise for X6
or DB2 for System z? Windows Datacenter Edition or z/OS ? Some people
tend to choose an ungly apple 10c/each than fine orange $10/each. Ok,
maybe it's not apple but potato, YMMV, etc. etc.
Personal note: I'm considered as mainframe bigot in my environment.
