Don't. I have been stress testing an iMac in a store situation for more than 6 weeks of NON-STOP adjustments, the thing is PERFECT. Apple hit one out of the park on that one. My understanding is that there is some kind of counterweighting system as well as a some springs involved, but don't ask me. Yes the springs could break, but so far (at my local CompUSA) they've seen over 1000 go out and only 1 come back for this problem. > The eMac is heavy however it is the traditional iMac idea, just bigger > and as noted heavier. > Which is exactly why Apple never came out with a 17" iMac earlier ... it would have had too many disadvantages. The eMac wouldn't be anywhere near the hit it is if it had been a G3 chip and $500 more expensive (as it would have been if Apple had put it out when the Mac community was screaming for it ...) > Then too both have the newer OS X and variants... > What do you mean "variants?" > Macintosh I suspect is changing operating system versions faster than > Windows ever did. > I really don't understand this sentence no matter how many times I read it. What do you mean by this? If you're referring to Mac OS X in general, that happened two years ago now. We shifted from the homebrew (but brilliant) Mac OS to a UNIX base. Nothing's changed since then apart from the perfectly normal upgrade cycle of fixing bugs and adding features. Apple's not going to be shifting from UNIX to anything else anytime in the next decade or two, you can bet the farm on that. That much has been made explicitly clear on repeated occasions by Steve, Phil, and most emphatically Avie. If you mean that Apple successfully shifted a good portion of its user base from the old codebase to the new one with a minimum of pain in a minimum of time, I'd have to say they're off to an excellent start but the jury's still out on that one. Certainly Apple got roughly 20% of the user base to upgrade *far* faster than MS has been able to get their userbase to switch from Win9x codebase to NT codebase, but how long will it take for 50% to switch? Nobody knows yet. My personal guess would be another two years. > Then too purchasing anything first year out may be asking for > problems. > > Best wait to see what glitches appear... This is outright rubbish. The eMac in particular is, as stated BY YOU, just the traditional G3 iMac with a bigger screen. The technology of the eMac is long proven (almost five years now!). The G4 iMac, apart from it's spindle, is just a reworked Cube and so also represents proven technology. There from a glitch in the earliest batch of iPods involving loose FW connectors, but I haven't seen *any* widespread reports of mass problems as we did with (for example) the Powerbook 5300 or the scratching in the Cube's encasing. Sure, we can all find some instances of bad products out there, "lemons out of the box" if you will, but by and large Apple represents the leading edge in quality computers (particularly when compared to PC box manufacturers). It might be prudent for "nervous nellie" buyers to wait a few months after a *brand new* product is announced to see if manufacturing defects or QA problems pop up, certainly ... but in the case of the iMac and eMac the technology is standard, and hey ... there's always Applecare. :) _Chas_ Come to ...
