There hasn't been a definitive "nay" from Apple AFAIK. All we have is
Schiller's remarks that "it's certainly not very high on the priority
list" and "very few--if any--people use it anymore". CNet says "An
Apple representative declined to comment further on future support of
Classic." What the dog did in the night.
I do take your point about the Gruber piece: I happen to think his
interpretation is the simplest and most likely, but you're right that
it's not inevitable. He does add that he has confirmed Apple has no
plans to support Classic, but he doesn't say who confirmed it (and "no
plans" leaves wriggle room).
Case not proven, then. I still don't think Classic will get a reprieve.
Why would Apple say that OS 8/9 apps won't run in Rosetta without
adding that they will or might run in a ported Classic? They've been
running OS X on Intel iron since Cheetah. If porting Classic was
relatively easy, they did it years ago. Why would Jobs miss a chance to
show how seamless the transition would be for users by demonstrating
New Classic in action?
"Look, we can even run World Book Encyclopedia for 1998!"
There was a real need for Classic a few years back, just as there is
for Rosetta now. Apple knew that people would defer buying new hardware
if they had to replace all their software, or wait 18 months for a
compatible version. But another comment of Schiller's is telling
(emphasis added):
"We've done research to determine who *buying new products from us*
is using Classic. You really can't find hardly anyone who does
anymore."
Apple needs to focus on getting current apps updated and ready for the
handover, to cater for the relatively frequent updaters "buying new
products from us". By the time the last PPC Macs roll off the conveyor
belt, it will be nearly six years since Steve Jobs held a mock funeral
for OS 9.
I'm not a gambling man anyway, but I certainly wouldn't put money on
Classic surviving the transition. I'd be more likely to bet on the
triumphant return of Clarus the Dogcow.
