I saw Schiller's comments right after I made my post. And I interpert
them about the same as you... Apple *might* keep Classic alive, but if
they do, it will be after everything else is already done and ready to
roll AND if at that time people are actually complaining about a need for
it.

I'll be sorry to see it go, as that will mean I may finally be forced off
of Claris Emailer. But I have to admit, I still use OS 9 on all but a few
Macs at work, so I still use a ton of "classic" software... and yet other
than Emailer, there is nothing I'm doing on OS X machines that needs
Classic (and I'm the only one running Emailer, everyone else is either on
Outlook Express or Eudora, both of which have OS X native versions). So
even I, a heavy OS 8 and 9 user, have no real deal breaker need for
Classic in OS X.

My guess is, there is a technical reason Classic doesn't work already. If
it was simply a matter of recompile for Intel, Apple would, simply
because they can. But Classic may do some funny things behind the scenes
to access the Mac hardware to fake an OS 9 Mac internally. And those
things may be more of an effort to move to Intel.

I think the final answer will come in about two weeks when the first
Mac/Intel developer machines start to ship. Once developers have them in
their hands, they will know if Classic works or not (at least if Classic
works now). My guess is, whatever the Intel version of OS X is doing now
is more or less what it will be doing when the machines are officially
released. So if Classic isn't working now, it probably won't be working
for the release.
