I am using a 740 with Panther and Classic. It prints black with its
black ink cartridge. We know because we replace the black cartridge
more often than the color. The peculiar thing is that the printer will
not operate at all without having both cartridges available with ink,
whether with OS 8, 9, or X. That may be what confuses you.
