How strange... You think that you have monkeys in your family? What
kind of pervert would consider themselves to be married to a
monkey? I
have no monkeys in my family.
Ah, but you do. According to the logic of the x86 crowd, all humans
are direct descendants of monkeys. Ergo, it is appropriate for you to
invite them to your family reunion, since you are descended from them
and thus related.
Now, I happen to be a person that agrees that humans are descended
from apes (since it's a fact, and I like facts). However, I am
intelligent enough to draw distinctions between the families of
humans and apes. I can even draw distinctions between modern humans
and primitive humans, or discontinued/obsolete (aka dead) humans and
in-production (living) humans. Future humans, even!
I don't invite my dead relatives, my ancient forebears or my genetic
antecedents (monkeys) to my family reunions. Likewise, I do not
pretend that just because the original 8086 begat other processors
that they are all part of the same family. There are easily
recognisable "leaps" in the evolution of chips, and thus easy for
people who don't cling to the past to draw a distinction between the
technology used in an 8086 and the technology used as in a Core Duo.
To be clear: yes, the Core Duo is part of a history of processors
that began with the 8086. In the sense that it is yet another
processor made by Intel, it has a clear connection. But that's pretty
much where the connection ends. From the manufacturing process to the
connections used on the die to the material of the die itself, the
Core Duo is entirely different from the 80x86 family of processors.
They are "related" only in the sense that I am related to all other
people who share my skin/hair/eye colour. In every material way, they
are different.
That is what Intel says, and they have no reason to lie about this. I
am not trying to prove a negative ("just because Intel doesn't say
it's x86 doesn't mean it isn't because they don't explicitly say it's
not, so it's up to you to prove me wrong!"), I am pointing out that
users of the "x86" lingo are inaccurate and archaic. The term has
been obsolete for years.
A small reward for those who have suffered this "debate" this far --
I hope you'll take it as the lighthearted joke it's intended to be:
If President Bush were held to the same exacting standards of
linguistic precision that this email discussion has been, he'd never
open his mouth again for fear of being impeached on the spot. :)
Cheers
Chas
