I would appreciate any input from the list on trying to get this machine running again. I've got a 233 Bondi iMac that is stuck when trying to boot. It also needs firmware updates for both the CD-ROM and Open Firmware. What is the easiest way to install these if I'm also having trouble with the CD-ROM? Can one drop a hard drive with OS 9 loaded into the iMac and boot it to install the firmware >> updates?

This Apple support page deals with installing memory, but it shows you how to get into the older iMacs. Once inside, you can look around for the hard drive.

I have a 333 iMac which I think is physically identical, and I'm also having trouble with the CD-ROM (well, it's basically dead). I had the same problems as you describe. I was unable to boot from an external USB CD-ROM or anything else (the hard drive also crapped out as well!)

Wasn't able to fix the problem until I bought a G4 Powermac (Gigabit ethernet); I removed the hard drive from the iMac (pretty easy, once you pull the chassis out; it's right under the CD-ROM, and held in by just 2 small screws, and the CD-ROM comes out without any tools). I put the HD into the G4, erased/reformatted it and installed OS9 and X.2 from a retail CD, then reinstalled into the iMac. It worked! It's fine now, except I still have to replace the internal CD-ROM, but otherwise I use my external USB CD burner (Iomega).
